#MelanomaMonday

(google)

Monday of this week was "Melanoma Monday."

If you just happened upon my blog and don't know what happened, let me explain...
(google)
May is Skin Cancer Awareness month and Melanoma is the most life threatening form of Skin Cancer. Black is the "ribbon" color of Melanoma and due to it's severity/people's deisre to raise awareness, people created a day called "Melanoma Monday". On this Monday, we band together to wear the color black in support, recognition, and honor of the fight with Melanoma.

Here are a couple facts about Melanoma, in case you didn't know:

*"People who use tanning beds once a month before the age of 35 increase their melanoma risk by 75%...
*Melanoma is the second most common cancer for women aged 25-29...
*Rates for melanoma are increasing faster than nearly all other cancers." (source)

With Melanoma being the reality that it is and because of the impact it's had on my life, I am a firm believer in spreading awareness.

So, I did my part!
(google)

I shared information on social media.

I encouraged others to wear black...

and I wore black.

Thanks so much for all who wore black with me on Monday, May 6, 2013!! I hope that the awareness we spread has a ripple effect!

Movin' along, Goodbye March!

It's been real, March.

Being jobless, does not necessarily mean I don't have things to do.

So, March, we've been a busy couple -

we tried the French Market (Amazing!)

Do you like Crepes? Do you like French decor? Do you like eating at locally owned places?

Ok. ok. I'll stop

but if you're in the area, please say you'll try this place out??

I practiced looking for things to take pictures of. and edit. and post to instagram.

and -

you get the point!

So, the hashtag #touristeyes was born.

Feel free to use it for your city.

Try looking at your city through an outsiders eyes!

But it was fun!

How was your March? What were you inspired to take pictures of? Did you get to spend time with any special friends? Tell me below, I'd love to hear about your amazing March!

Style 101: Part Two

Here's my second installment of my Style 101!

I created a Polyvore set/actual outfit before going to substitute teach in Kindergarten the other day - I was working with the little ones and it was important to look good! not.

I was more concerned about what the other teachers would think of me.

honesty people, honesty.

So, here's what I came up with!

I admit it.

I got one compliment!

hey. that's better than none!

I was pretty happy with it, I've worn it twice three times since then :)

What outfits are you loving right now? Anything giving you extra confidence? Tell me about it in the comments, I'd love to hear!

Mela Reactions

Yep.

I wanted to share a story, a scenario with you today. If you stay at The Hotel Melanoma, are a fellow Melanoma Warrior, or just know someone dealing with Melanoma/Skin Cancer - this may be a familiar story.

My story is all too normal. I am a red head, who tanned nicely, and really did not like being pale, etc... I wanted to look nice, and after someone I knew tried the tanning bed, I decided to try it too. I did it for about a year, until advice was given and I quit.

Fast-forward another year or so, and I was being seen by a dermatologist for an "unusual" mole on my neck. Then, I got the phone call - "where are you?" "We got your results." "Dr. A wants you to call her at home."

The rest is history. Just know that I learned about Melanoma, I reached out and found (still finding) a community of support, and now have a healthy fear of

...sun damage

...skin cancer

...melanoma

Recently, I attended the Women's Expo, with my mom and nieces/nephew. We like to go to these events to see the booths, try the samples, and get FREE stuff :) We picked a route, headed in, and *BAM* I was accosted by a huge booth set up for a local tanning company.

side note: believe me, I've seen tanning companies, advertisements, etc... since my experience. This was just, different.

I didn't get too close, but they had a huge booth, complete with employees and a tan model. I was totally unprepared for how it affected me.

I was so bothered by it.

I was so frustrated by what they were promoting.

I was so upset by the booth.

I'm pretty sure I was shaking with nerves/emotions.

All those people needed to know about the dangers of tanning. The tanning company shouldn't have been casually promoting such a dangerous practice. One part of me would like to be a person with a megaphone, standing there, and telling the dangers to the crowd.

I didn't say anything to them, even though I wanted to. I did talk to my mom and we thought I should share this.

It still bothers me. It still makes me emotional.

Because I care for me.

I care because of Hillary Quinn Kind, and Jillian Hayes, and each of you.

Educate someone else. Lobby if you can. Volunteer. Do what you can to change someone else's future. Make it personal.

Style 102: Crafty

I'm calling this "Style 102" people, because we're going to a whole new level!

I was recently inspired as I was on one of those rabbit trails, you know the kind?!

You start browsing Pinterest, and then you find a really neat pin, so you look up the blogger, and then you're stuck browsing their blog, until you find a really awesome project, and then you're inspired to start your own project!

What?

That only happens to me?

Fine.

Thanks to Merrick at "Merrick's Art", I've become inspired to start "upcycling" my clothes.

She took this plain white sweater and added some pizzaz. or something. to it.

If Upcyling is a new term to you - learn it today!

I defined it to a friend as - taking something that's "eh" and making it into something that get's a thumbs up.

See? Really simple.

So, here's my copycat sweater.

I was so excited to do this, and in true Rebekah style, I just jumped in and figured it out. If you go to Merrick's page, she has a much better tutorial!

Here's how I did it!

1. Find a sweater

2. Dig in your mother's million and one* bottles of paint for fabric paint.

3. Give up and decide that acrylic will work. It says it will stick to all surfaces!

4. Sketch your word, by copying Merrick's word, onto white paper.

5. Add a heart because it's cute.

6. Put cardboard in your sweater (to protect) and pin your paper to your sweater.

7. Paint it.

8. Add extra where it looks thin, without risking blurring your letters.

9. Let it dry for a little bit and pull the paper off because you can't wait to see how it turned out!

10. Let it dry overnight.

11. Be uber excited! Wear and show it off!

I loved this project and hope you do too! Feel free to copy me, copying Merrick, for yourself! :)

What crafty style have you been trying recently? Any good Pinterest finds?

Rebekah!
